Mormon Temple Instruction & Learning, the Eternal Perspective

slc_lds_templeIn the wake of HBO’s airing of an episode of “Big Love” that depicts a couple of minutes of sacred temple worship, I have been pondering deeply those sacred ordinances today. In true Hollywood fashion, the show’s producers (Tom Hanks as the Executive Producer) and writers have once again attempted to use the shock effect to make a buck. Although the “mechanics” of what was shown are somewhat accurate, it was spiritually void. In order to truly understand this ordinance, one is required to perform it many times, often, with a true desire to learn from the more than an hour of instruction given. Seeing the final minutes with no preparation or instruction once is not what God intended for this sacred ceremony. I am reminded of the scripture found in Matthew 7:6" href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/matt/7/6#6" target="_blank">Matthew 7:6:

“Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.”

Christ’s gospel contains our pearls and HBO and others who criticize His Church and His gospel are swine. To truly understand the ordinances of the temple requires an eternal perspective, both for past generations and future generations. We perform these ordinances for ourselves so that our posterity will continue for eternity as well as for our progenitors. Temple ceremonies have ancient roots, so many things about them may seem strange and weird to the unprepared mind. The Lord’s ways are not the world’s ways and He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

I suppose the most disconcerting thing about this whole issue is how religious rights and sacred practices can be attacked so publicly with no legal interference or investigation. George Washington wrote,

“Avoid all disrespect to or contempt of the religion of the country and its ceremonies.”
(George Washington's letter to Benedict Arnold, Sep. 14, 1775)

For one person or group of people to disrespect a religion or it’s ceremonies is against our founding fathers’ will for our country.

Here is a great three minute video which summarizes why the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints builds temples and why they are sacred to us. There are interviews with non-LDS scholars and religious leaders. It is a summary of a much longer video titled, “Between Heaven and Earth” which you can view in the playlist below the 3 minute video here.

  1. Hey Scott! I love this post. You have stated very plainly and eloquently the same things I have been feeling. Thanks for the scripture references and videos to help those who may not understand.
